This morning I heard a story about an elderly gentleman who was remembering back to his childhood. He had been a young child when the stock market crashed in 1929. He was walking home the day after the big crash and stopped in wonder as he watched a grown man standing outside a locked up bank, banging on the doors with bloody knuckles, screaming “Give me my money! Give me my money!”
That is a vivid picture of what is going on inside many people’s hearts and minds today. Fear appears to be winning. And as we ponder what to invest in we can quickly run through the options and come to the conclusion that there are no sure things.
Guess what? That is great news. We are awakening to the Real. There are no sure things except for One – Jesus. And let’s look at what He said about investments:
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Those are Jesus’ words. I see no discussion of retirement. I hear no words about 401Ks (or 101Ks). This is Jesus matter of factly telling His followers how to invest their lives, their gifts, their dreams, their passions.
This is what I want my life to be about. I have been anxiety ridden for the last week or so because I am pretty sure I heard from the Lord about our next steps but I was letting life and fears shout over what I had already heard. There is no reason to have anxiety – Jesus promises rest and peace to those who, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, give their burdens to Him. Matthew 11:28-30; Philippians 4:6-8. I’m ready.
Father, I’m yours.
