Now, Ann Coulter clearly doesn’t represent all conservatives, all Christians, all republicans or any other group, but she is out there in the media’s scrutiny and often gets put up as the face of many things. She was recently on CNBC’s “The Big Idea” with Donny Deutsch. In that show she said the following:
“We just want Jews to be perfected, as they say,†Coulter told a seemingly startled Deutsch.
After the break, Coulter attempted to clarify her remarks.
“That is what Christians consider themselves, perfected Jews. We believe the Old Testament,†she said. “As you know from the Old Testament, God was constantly getting fed up with humans for not being able to, you know, live up to all the laws. What Christians believe – this is just a statement of what the New Testament is – is that that’s why Christ came and died for our sins. Christians believe the Old Testament. You don’t believe our testament.â€
Now, I don’t like the way she said this at all and I’m not sure what all else she said or how that fits in with the context of the show, but here is how CNBC is writing about it:
The remarks were reminiscent of those that got radio shock jock Don Imus fired earlier this year from his morning radio show at WFAN-AM in New York, with simulcast on MSNBC. During an April broadcast, Imus called players on the Rutgers University basketball team “nappy-headed hos.â€
Fair comparison? I don’t think so. Do you? [NEW ADDITION: The report from Fox News, including more of the transcript]
And, we would all do well to remember that the media promotes itself and its material, and she keeps her face on TV and promotes her material, either by being a bit shocking or by attempting to make the mundane seem shocking.
